First, check the schedule before you make any plans. Launches out of the Cape get scrubbed and rescheduled all the time for weather or technical stuff, so I never build a whole night around one until I’ve confirmed it’s still a go that day. Search the current launch schedule the morning of, then keep an eye on it — the time can shift by hours.
Second, get there early. Way earlier than you think. Traffic on the Space Coast gets thick when there’s a big launch, parking near the water fills up, and you do not want to be circling the block during the countdown. I like to roll in with time to spare, grab a spot on the beach or somewhere with a clear eastern view, and just settle in.
Third, bring the cozy stuff. A blanket, a couple of drinks, snacks, and a light layer even in summer because the breeze off the water sneaks up on you once the sun’s down. Night launches are the most magical, honestly — the whole sky lights up and you feel the rumble a few seconds later.
And here’s the thing that makes it a real date instead of just watching the sky: put the phones down. You’ll want to film it, and one quick clip is fine, but the countdown together is the whole point. Grab each other’s hand, count it down out loud, and actually be there for it.
