Hey friends, it’s Lizzie! I turned 30 and suddenly had this urge to grab my 25-year-old self by the shoulders and tell her everything. Not the Pinterest-quote version. The real, slightly embarrassing, learned-it-the-hard-way version.
So I made a list. These are the actual things I wish I knew before 30 — the ones that would have saved me money, tears, a couple of friendships that were never going to work, and honestly a lot of time spent worrying about my thighs. Save this one, send it to your group chat, come back to it when you need it. Here we go.
On love, friendship & the people you keep
- The right person feels calm, not chaotic. Butterflies are cute, but peace is the real green flag. Brandon never once made me feel like I had to audition to be loved.
- You can outgrow friends and still love them. Some people are for a season. Letting go gently isn’t cruel — it’s honest.
- “I’m not mad, I just needed space” is a complete sentence. You don’t owe a five-paragraph essay to protect your own energy.
- Text back the friend who makes you laugh. Prioritize the low-drama, high-joy people. They’re your actual wealth.
- Nobody is thinking about you as much as you fear. That thing you’re cringing about from 2019? They forgot it that same week.
- Say the nice thing out loud. Tell people they matter now, not in a toast at some future event that may never come.
- A relationship shouldn’t require you to shrink. If you’re constantly editing yourself to keep the peace, that’s not peace. That’s silence.
- Make the first move on friendship in your 30s. Adult friendships take effort. Be the one who plans the coffee. It’s worth it.
On money, work & building a life
Nobody handed me a money manual, so I learned most of this by messing it up first. Here’s what I’d fast-forward straight to your inbox if I could.
- Start the boring savings account now. Even $25 a paycheck. Future-you will cry happy tears, I promise.
- A “prestigious” job you hate isn’t a flex. I chased titles once. The title didn’t hug me back on hard days.
- Learn to negotiate, even when it’s terrifying. The worst they say is no, and “no” leaves you exactly where you started.
- Your side passion is allowed to just be joy. Not everything has to become a hustle. Kickboxing was mine long before it was ever a story I told.
- Cheap-but-constant beats expensive-and-guilt. One good pair of jeans over five sad ones you never wear. This applies to almost everything.
- You don’t have to have it “figured out” by 30. Reinvention is a feature, not a failure — I dig into that in my post on how to reinvent yourself at 30 if you’re standing at a crossroads right now.
- Track where your money actually goes for one month. Not to shame yourself — just to see. Awareness alone changes behavior.
- Rest is productive. I used to wear burnout like a badge. Now I know a rested Lizzie makes better decisions in every single area.
On your body, your mind & your confidence
This is the section I’d tattoo on my forearm if I could. So much of my 20s was spent at war with a body that was, frankly, just trying to keep me alive.
- Your body is not a before photo. It’s the thing that lets you hug people and throw a solid right hook. Treat it like a teammate, not a project.
- Move because it feels good, not as punishment. Ten years of kickboxing taught me that. I show up for how strong it makes me feel, never as penance for a meal.
- Drink the water. Wear the sunscreen. Boring, unsexy, life-changing. Space Coast sun is not playing around, friends. 🌴
- You’re allowed to change your mind. About your career, your hair, your city, your whole personality. Growth requires it.
- Comparison is a thief and it works in silence. The highlight reel you’re measuring yourself against is somebody’s best 30 seconds of a hard day.
- Therapy is maintenance, not an emergency. You don’t wait for the car to break down to change the oil.
- “No” is a full sentence — I know I said it twice. That’s how important it is. Repeat it until it stops feeling scary.
- Your gut is smarter than your overthinking. Every single time I ignored that quiet inner “no,” I regretted it. Learn to trust the flinch.
- Confidence is built, not born. It’s a stack of small promises you kept to yourself. Start stacking today.
- You can start over on a random Tuesday. No New Year, no birthday, no big sign required. The permission is already yours.
The last four (the ones that changed everything)
- Perfectionism is just fear in a nice outfit. Done and imperfect beats perfect and never. This entire blog exists because I finally hit publish scared.
- Protect your mornings. How you start the day sets the tone for all of it. Mine is coffee, sunshine, no phone for the first bit.
- Romanticize the ordinary. The grocery run, the slow Sunday, the drive with your windows down. That IS the life. Nobody’s coming to hand you a “real one” later.
- Your 30s can genuinely be the best decade yet. More self-trust, less noise, zero patience for nonsense. If you want the full attitude shift, my post on the mindset shifts in your 30s is basically the sequel to this list.
That’s my 30, friends. Some of these I learned gracefully. Most of them I learned face-first. But every single one made my 30s feel lighter, braver, and so much more mine.
Now I want to hear from you: what’s the one thing YOU wish someone had told you before you turned 30? Drop it in the comments — I read every single one, and your lesson might be exactly what another reader needs today.
And if this hit home, come hang out with me over on Instagram @sealillly — that’s where I share the day-to-day, the real moments, and a whole lot of 30-something realness. See you there! 💛
